In 1997, Caroline Chisholm Catholic College (CCCC) was established with the amalgamation of Christ the King College, St. John’s College and Chisholm College. Situated in Melbourne’s west the co-educational college now caters for around 1500 students on two sites.

To accommodate much greater access for each student in all classes, CCCC recently increased its computer lab size from 24 to 29. This means all classes can use the labs with each student having access to their own workstation.

To ensure student access and make the most of desk-top ‘real estate’ on offer, the college approached Computelec to replace existing machines with small form factor PCs.

With a commitment to socially responsible practises as part of the school’s documented vision, environmental sustainability was also a factor in CCCC’s selection criteria.

Working with Computelec, CCCC selected HP Compaq dc7900 Ultra-slim Desktop PC. The innovative design and smaller footprint allows the college to accommodate four or even five computers per desk - instead of three - while allowing adequate room for students’ books.

The college employs Intel’s Active Management technology which allows the ICT Manager Luke Georgiou and his team to ‘lights-out’, centrally manage all of CCCC’s computers.

The active management system gives IT staff pre-boot access to each PC which allows them to connect and re-image the drive before the operating system is activated, simplifying trouble shooting and maintenance.

The new PCs are 85% more power efficient. The system also allows the ICT Team to automatically to power off every computer at night and on again in the morning before students arrive. As a result CCCC has been able to significantly reduce power consumption;
its energy bill.

The installation process was carried out in with Computelec and HP Planet Partners Hardware Return & Recycling Programme. This ensured the 90 obsolete computers, associated accessories and the packaging from over 100 new PCs, was disposed of in an environmentally and socially responsible way.
